I have a unique story, based on my travel with my camera through the 47 prefectures of Japan, mostly by local train, and now it’s time to tell my story through the medium of photography.
“Not Street Photography:” Cities like NYC and Tokyo are fertile territory for street photography, but not so for smaller towns. Using similar techniques but different subjects in the prefectures, I’ve come to call this “not street photography.”
At first, meeting and photographing people in the remote prefectures was awkward, but eventually I learned how to overcome the barriers so that I could meet people and make their portraits (with their permission).
The many train stations soon became fertile territory for my photography.
A unique type of train — so-called one-man densha because a single trainman operates as engineer, conductor and ticket clerk — became my favorite mode of transportation. Often only a single car, these trains run slowly into the local areas of Japan.
