Bhaktapur

The ancient city of Bhaktapur, Nepal, specifically the old walled city, provokes an array of images for me – images that extend far beyond the photographic images in this gallery.  This is difficult to explain in words.  The walled city is so old as to be almost impossible to imagine its origin, and yet it is alive with the Newari people who live there.

I returned to Bhaktapur in 2023 after a 3-year haitus due to COVID-19. My camera and I continued to explore more about this ancient city.

Indra Durga is one of the festivals in Bhaktapur

This group of men meet every morning to recite ancient Sanskrit chants

For women, a daily chore is going to the neighborhood well to get water for use at home, which may also be a social occasion. Or sometimes just sitting at the window.

Bhaktapur is a very social community, with designated areas just for sitting and chatting.

The streets and sidewalks are busy places during the day, with many people working at a variety of jobs, most of the work done by hand.
